Cates’ Tracing series is from her first solo exhibition in New York ‘Traces of the Invisible ‘- 2022. By tracing uneven surfaces such as walls and sidewalks, Cate is unearthing energy narratives within an urban environment. She wants to set an example of a cityscape that retains its humanity and connection to the earth. Everything is energy, our fast-moving society has made us unlearn the art of pausing for a second to connect to it.

This body of work captures physical energy and traces of human interaction with their direct environment. Cate is fascinated with the counter pressure of such surfaces. She explores the surface with touch, connecting her to the environment as she can feel each point of pressure. This also links to the human condition, the Frottages highlight the push and pull evident in life. Sometimes the lines are delicate and light, sometimes heavy and tick. There is flow and compression directly depicting the counter balance evident in daily life. This is Cates way to visualize and translate my experience of this energy.
